RM1.99 – the world’s lowest price! Anwar calls for constructive and objective parliamentary debate on petrol prices.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that the conflict in West Asia has impacted global fuel prices, yet the government has made every effort to maintain the subsidized price of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per liter, which is currently the lowest price in the world.

He emphasized that leaders from both the ruling and opposition parties should discuss energy-related issues based on facts.

He also pointed out that the government currently provides monthly diesel subsidies for specific sectors, amounting to as high as RM6 billion.

“Nevertheless, I and the government continue to face criticism, despite our utmost efforts to keep the price of RON95 among the lowest globally. Under difficult circumstances, we reduced the (subsidy) quota from 300 liters to 200 liters per month, yet we are still being blamed.”

“The rise in diesel prices does indeed affect the people, but for sectors such as farmers, fishermen, and public transportation, we provide subsidies totaling up to RM6 billion per month. Imagine, over 10 months, that already amounts to RM60 billion.”

“If we impose taxes on the poor, the people will be dissatisfied; yet without tax revenue, the state has no income. Therefore, it is time to seriously discuss solutions. Whether from the ruling party or the opposition, leaders should not make irresponsible statements. Since they aim to be leaders, they must offer opinions based on knowledge.”

Also serving as the Finance Minister, Anwar made these remarks today (4th) while attending the “Prime Minister’s Exchange Session with Students, Teachers, and Alumni of SMK Clifford in Kuala Kangsar.”

Anwar also urged all parties to reflect on the impact of the global energy situation amid the Middle East conflict, which has affected oil supply in many countries, including several ASEAN nations.

“In our country, the price of RON95 petrol is RM1.99 per liter, while in Singapore, it is as high as RM10. In one ASEAN country, 400 gas stations have already closed. Everyone should take this situation seriously, as we cannot remain unaffected either.”

Official Visit to Indonesia for a Reason

“Therefore, I have already issued orders, including canceling all ministers’ overseas trips, as transportation costs have risen significantly.”

As for his special visit to Jakarta, Indonesia, on March 27 to meet with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Anwar explained that this official trip was based on specific and crucial national security considerations. The entire visit lasted about three hours, after which he hurriedly returned to Malaysia.

“Later, some may ask why the Prime Minister went to Jakarta. There is a reason. I went to meet the President and stayed for only three hours. After landing at Jakarta Airport, I went directly to Prabowo’s residence for about two hours of talks. He then personally escorted me back to the airport so I could return to Malaysia immediately.”

“I am no longer young, but I did this because I believe it is my duty to the country.”
